Today was a good day. Our state tax return arrived (still no sign of the federal one) and so did my FMLA paperwork, which means that squid-sucking son of a bilge rat that calls itself a manager can’t say a damn thing about me taking time off for my doctor’s appointments anymore.
It was such a gloriously warm afternoon that I went outside and drew chalk patterns on our front walk. There are three kids living in the house on the corner, and they had set up a card table on the sidewalk and were yelling, “Bake Sale for Haiti!” at every passing car, so I [...]
It is very bizarre to read about all the snowstorms in the rest of the country. Our winter has been so mild that when I poked my head out the back door this morning, I wasn’t even really that surprised to see that I already have flowers coming up.
Today the library was full of pirates, Santas, furries, and 16th century astronomers. I think the “Keep Portland Weird” festival was a success.
Today is our first wedding anniversary. That is such a strange sentence to be writing. Anyway, we both took the day off work, so after sleeping in, we went out for breakfast at the Roxy, and then we went out browsing. We only actually spent money at Powell’s (the new volume of [...]
Could fry an egg on the cement, it’s so caliente!

There are moments when I was scrolling through when I really wish I could have heard the dialogue, particularly when Darth Vader turns up to object. Equal parts adorableness and maniacal giggling. And it turns out they’re even [...]
Portland has been conspiring to remind me of Annapolis today. First I run into a brick building with white edges (and a clock tower!) on the way back from the periodontist (more on that later) and then while I’m waiting for the bus to go home from work, a horde of men (and a [...]
High points of the 2009 Rose Festival Starlight Parade:
-The 501st Legion Cloud City Garrison Stormtroopers (and a few Jedi trailing along behind)
-The fact that said Garrison was followed by a high school band (I can’t remember which high school now) playing a medley of Star Wars tunes
-The International Longshore and Warehouse Union drill team [...]
The fact that almost all of the Trimet buses have GPS widgets in them now, so that you can call (or get on line) and see when the next bus will get to your stop, I understand, and think is awesome. Bus stops with lights on them at night, also awesome. Bus stops [...]
